
The adventures that the bearded brothers embark upon are founded upon fairytale dream-logic, which - while cute in some ways - doesn't make for a story that holds ones interest for long. The scenery and characters are vector based and minimalist, which is fine, but nothing particularly visually striking. It's unfortunately not a narratively engaging nor visually impressive picture book. As such, it manages to quite endearingly capture the feeling of a picture-book. Visual novels are their own genre entirely, and while many include branching paths in terms of plot and character interaction, very few do much to actualise their worlds, continuing largely to use the medium of writing to introduce settings, rather than utilising animated environments.īurly Men at Sea takes the concept a little further, and at least makes efforts to set the scene, with less of a focus on the dialogue, and more on the settings. Telltale's The Walking Dead have some of the same flavour, and games like This Book is a Dungeon are interactive interpretations of a story with branching paths, and deathtraps, albeit with minimal visual information. Games with branching dialogue options that affect outcomes down the line, e.g. It's surprising to me that there aren't more games in the style of classic choose-your-own adventure books. The trouble is that while Burly Men at Sea is a choose-your own-adventure book at its core, and doesn't offer much beyond a couple of ten minute playthroughs. There was a run of hard copies of the game in hardback print form, which is a claim that not many other games can make at the very least. There ought to be something else like this out there, but better Burly Men at Sea is a book, quite literally.
