Some traditions we have today come from the saturnalia celebrations. Presents could be gold covered apples, candles or sigillaria – small figures of people or animals. DIY music festival Saturnalia returns this June at Milans self-organised art space MACAO, a former slaughterhouse with a strict anti-art institution. Slaves were allowed to be masters for the day and would be served by their masters. Originally it took place on the 17 th December, but over time it came to be a week long.Īs with modern celebrations, people had parties, exchanged gifts and ate and drank too much! The Romans also saw it as a festival of equality and everyone wore a ‘freedman’s cap’ a small hat, a bit like a smurf’s hat, that was usually only worn by slaves who had been given their freedom. It was a festival to Saturn, one of the oldest Roman gods, who looked after crops. It’s a reminder that the sun will return and crops will grow. Santa will also be making an appearance during the day to reward those children who’ve been good this year! The Museum’s Saturnalia party is only a part of Christmas in Caerleon, a village wide celebration.Įven before Christ, and therefore Christmas, people have enjoyed a mid-winter festival. You can gamble with the soldiers in their barrack room, make some traditional Roman Saturnalia gifts. There will be Roman party food to try and delicious modern Christmas food to buy. We’ll have a whole host of activities for you to get involved with at our Saturnalia party.
